What are the benefits of the YOU CAN School Program?

The YOU CAN School Program provides:

Free Mandated Information

Many schools are required to provide presentations on certain topics, such as conflict resolution, violence prevention, drugs and alcohol, and disaster preparedness. Often schools must pay contractors to provide this information. The YOU CAN School Program puts a certified presenter in your classrooms for free.

Professional, Certified Presenters

National Guard presenters go through an extensive certification process to learn to present the YOU CAN program. The presenters bring their own audio-visual equipment and support materials. Each presentation is approximately 45 minutes long and is personalized and localized to be interesting and relevant to your students. The tone is informal--these aren't lectures, they're conversations. The presenters are real, friendly people who can connect with today's teenagers.

Life Skills and Survival Tools for Bright Futures

Many students need information for dealing with difficult situations and tough life choices. The YOU CAN School Program gives students clear, simple messages and concrete steps they can use to solve their own problems and take control of their lives. Some students never realize that they CAN afford to go to college, that they CAN avoid violence, that they CAN be leaders. The YOU CAN School Program provides positive role models who send clear messages that students can take control of their futures.

How can you get the program in your school?

To arrange for YOU CAN presentations in your school, use the Get the Program form. A National Guard representative for your area will contact you to schedule a presentation for your class. He or she can also give a demonstration for your faculty.

How do you use the YOU CAN School Program?

The program is flexible, to suit your needs. There are 30 presentations divided into four series that group related themes (go to Learn About the Presentations to find out more about each topic):

  • Blue — Health & Social Well-Being: Try these in Current Events, Life Skills, Health, and Speech classes.
  • Gold — Life Betterment: Integrate these with your English and Business curricula.
  • Green — Discovery: Great for History, Civics, and Geography classes.
  • Red — Disaster Preparedness: A natural for Science classes.

The Program is designed so that each presentation is a stand-alone piece that can be given in one class period. Or, you can schedule a series of related presentations back to back or over a series of days or weeks. The program is flexible, up to date, and student savvy.
